UAGP K - 12 Programs

MapTEACH - A hands-on education program for middle and high school students in Alaska focused on understanding the local landscape from mulitple perspectives and on learning to make and use computer-based maps of scientific, cultural and personal significance.

Stories of Culture and Place - Dr. Jason Ohler helps teachers and students blend oral, written, and digital storytelling in a unique approach to art, literacy and content exploration.

Math in a Cultural Context - A long-term collaborative project between UAF and Yup’ik communities, elders, teachers, mathematicians, and math educators that has produced nine published supplemental, culturally based, math curricula. This project is headed by Dr. Jerry Lipka.

Alaska Geography Materials

Alaska in Maps: A Thematic Atlas (CD-ROM)

The first version of Alaska in Maps CD-ROM edited by Dr. Roger Pearson (UAGP, UAF Professor Emeritus) and Marjorie Hermans was developed in 2000. With financial support from the UAGP, Dr. Pearson is currently developing an updated and upgraded version that will allow the CD-ROM to be used on Macintosh as well as PC platforms. Additionally, the new version will offer basic and advanced GIS capabilities. The new version is planned for release in January 2008. The current version of Alaska in Maps CD-ROM is available through our partner organization the Institute of the North .

Alaska in Maps: A Thematic Atlas (Print Version)

In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of Alaska Statehood (2009), Dr. Roger Pearson and Marjorie Hermans are developing a new edition of Alaska in Maps: A Thematic Atlas. Pearson and Hermans are working with teachers and content experts to produce an updated and slightly expanded version of the popular classroom atlas. The atlas is planned for release in January 2009. The current edition of Alaska in Maps (print version) is available through Todd Communications .

Alaska in Maps (Internet Version)

An internet, interactive map version of Alaska in Maps is available through our partner organization the Institute of the North . This web site supports both Mac and PC platforms. While containing none of the atlas text materials, the internet version offers map information not available in either the print or CD-ROM versions.

Teacher Guides

Teacher Guides for both Alaska in Maps (print version) and Alaska A Land in Motion (elementary text) are available from our partner organization the Institute of the North .

Meeting of Frontiers

Our partner organization, the Institute of the North has available for download numerous teaching units dealing with the intermingled history of Russia and the United States in the North Pacific region, especially Alaska. The teaching materials were the result of a project with the Library of Congress "Meeting of Frontiers" program.
