Patricia Heiser

Assistant Professor of Geography

University of Alaska Fairbanks, '97, Ph.D

Dr. Heiser is a physical geographer whose research interests focus on landscape evolution, paleogeography, and Quaternary environments. Her current research is focused on the post-glacial landscape changes in Lake Clark and Katmai National Parks and includes sub-projects in glacial and lake level history, vegetation change, tephra history and lake productivity. At UAF, Patricia teaches Physical Geography, Mapping and Landscape Analysis, and Natural Disasters. She has a strong interest in interdisciplinary curriculum development and in field-based course innovations. She has taught interdisciplinary field courses in Alaska; Curacao, Netherlands Antilles; and in Tuscany, Italy.

Patricia earned her B.S at University of Vermont in Natural History and Ecology, and her Ph.D. in Geology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1997. Her dissertation work on the glacial and sea level history of the Bering Strait Region incorporated SAR imagery analyses with field mapping to link glacial histories in Russia and Alaska. Other research projects include surficial mapping of the unglaciated coastal plain of the Seward Peninsula, and the Holocene history of the Kobuk Dunes of NW Alaska. She has held positions and taught Earth Science and Geology courses at University of Alaska Anchorage, Ohio University, and at Utah State University.
